Summary:The Cogwheel train to Mount Rigi was the first of these means of transport in Europe. The first ascent was made on the May 21, 1871 from the village of Vitznau to Staffelhohë, near the summit, where it would eventually get on 23 June 1873. Subsequently, on June 4, 1875 the rising from the slope of Arth would start. The chief engineer of this work was Niklaus Riggenbah known for his many contributions to the railway world, specially on having designed this trains using the zipper, now bearing his name. The journey from Vitznau to the summit is 6975 m, saving a drop of 1313 m with a maximum slope of 25 %. From Arth the length is 8551 meters with a drop of 1234 meters and maximum slope of 20 %.
